Emergency Closure at I-59/20 SB Update #4, in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM – On Thursday, April 5th, the Alabama Department of Transportation announced that I-59/20 Southbound is closed at the I-65 Interchange due to construction activities that occurred overnight. Ramps to I-65 Northbound and Southbound will remain open.
Detour will be to use I-65 Northbound to 16th Street and then use I-65 South to return to I-59 Southbound
The travelling public has never been at risk or in danger during this event.
While installing a Steel Girder there was a safety occurrence with the supports which created a potential concern. An additional support is now being addressed.
ALDOT decided to close I-59/20 South at the I-65 Interchange in an overabundance of caution to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
The lanes are expected to re-open by Saturday, April 7th. The contractor is working diligently with us to resolve this issue.
We are addressing this concern now and will keep the media and public informed of the status. We are requesting that the traveling public please pay attention to caution signs, message boards and other warning signs.
Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this construction to improve Alabama’s roadways.
ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For further information, visit www.dot.state.al.us.
