I-59/20 – 31st Street Bridge Replacement Project Continues, in Birmingham
JEFFERSON COUNTY –. Weather permitting, the construction project on I-59/20 just north of downtown Birmingham will continue as follows:
The contractor for the above project is planning on implementing interstate lane closures this week on the I-59/20 Southbound (WB) and Northbound (EB) roadways to remove the existing 31st Street North Bridge Girders. Please see the below for times and locations.
- Tuesday, October 25 the I-59/20 southbound (outside) 2 lanes near Milepost 127.5 will be closed from 8 p.m. until approximately 6 a.m., Wednesday, October 26.
o The off ramp to 31stt Street North will remain open.
- Wednesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 27 the I-59/20 northbound (inside) 2 lanes near Milepost 126.5 will be closed from 7 p.m. until approximately 7 a.m., each day.
Rolling roadblocks will be implemented each night from 11 p.m. til 3 a.m. to safely remove the girders above the travel way. These complete interstate closures will not last more than 15 minutes each and then traffic will be able to clear.
State troopers will be on site to assist with blue lighting for the lane closures and with the rolling roadblocks.
Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
