Planned Lane Closures on I-59/20 SB, in Birmingham
As Construction Continues the CBD Project
BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation will continue a project to improve the I-59/20 and I-65 Interchange as follows:
- Wednesday, May 9th and Thursday, May 10th, I-59/20 Southbound from 31st Street to the Carraway Blvd. ramp will be closed from 11 p.m. til 5 a.m. to set Steel Girders across the Interstate. In conjunction with the closure, there will be a double right lane closure set up from 12 a.m. til 6 a.m. so that the full closure opens into the double right lane closure. There will also be a Rolling Road Block as needed, after the interstate opens from each closure.
DETOUR: 31st Street exit, turn right, left on 12th Avenue, right on Carraway Blvd., left on Finley Blvd., exit onto I-59/20 from Finley.
- Tuesday, May 8th, Thursday, May 10th, and Friday, May 11th there will be double right lanes closures on I-59/20 Northbound from Red Mountain Expressway to 31st Street from 12:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m.
- Tuesday, May 8th, Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th there will be Rolling Road Blocks as needed on I-59/20 Northbound from Red Mountain Expressway to 31st Street from 11:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.
Message boards will be up along the path for the detour.
The closures will require the use of Law Enforcement Officers.
A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this construction operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
