I-59/20 Bridge Project Update
(CBD) Central Business District Project

BIRMINGHAM– As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.

The following closures will take place weather permitting as follows:

  • 15th Street North between Rev. Abraham Woods and 12th Avenue North Woods will be closed Thursday, October 17th thru Wednesday, October 23rd from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. for Paving Operation.
  • 16th Street North between Rev. Abraham Woods and 10th Avenue North will be closed Wednesday, October 23rdthru Friday, October 25th from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. for CBD Painting.
  • 23rd Street North between Rev. Abraham Woods and 9th Avenue North will be closed Thursday, October 17th thru Saturday, October 19th from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. for Girder Erections.
  • Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. between Caraway and 28th Street will be closed Thursday, October 17th thru Thursday, October 24th from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. to install CBD Heading.
  • Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. between 24th Street and 25th Street will be closed Thursday, October 17th thru Wednesday, October 23rd from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. to install CBD Heading.
  • 9th Avenue North between 16th Street and 18th Street will be closed Thursday, October 17th thru Thursday, October 24th from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. to install CBD Heading.
  • 9th Avenue North between 18th Street and 19th Street will be closed Thursday, October 17th thru Thursday, October 24th from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. to install CBD Heading
  • 9th Avenue North between 19th Street North to Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. will be closed Thursday, October 17ththru Thursday, October 24th from 12 a.m. until 11 p.m. for CD Heading.

Detour signs will be in place where necessary. Please keep in mind that all construction plans can change due to weather and other factors. As always, use caution and obey the posted speed limits.

This work is a part of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
