(CBD) Central Business District Project

BIRMINGHAM–As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.

Listed below are current city streets beneath the CBD bridges that are open/closed during the demo and reconstruction of the bridges:

Open

  • 16th Street N
  • 18th Street N
  • 19th Street N
  • 23rd Street N
  • 25th Street N

Closed

  • 15th Street N
  • Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd – between 9th Ave & Rev. Abraham Woods Jr Blvd (Reopens tomorrow)
  • 22nd Street N (Closes after Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. reopens)
  • 24th Street N

***9th Avenue between Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. and 23rd Street (the one-way, westbound lane) is now closed for the remainder of the project.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution, obey the posted speed limits, adjust arrival/departure times, and use I-459 to go around the closures whenever possible. I-459 will be the most efficient way to avoid construction delays and bypass the closure. For local traffic, there will be signed detours along with increased presence of law enforcement, Alabama Service Assistance Patrol (ASAP) trucks, and wrecker service to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For traffic alerts and updates, please visit www.5920bridge.com, utilize the ALGO traffic app, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
