BIRMINGHAM–As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.
The following closures will take place weather permitting, during the removal of the existing structures:
- Carraway exit ramp from 59/20 SB will close Monday, February 25th and Thursday, February 28th from11 p.m. until 5 a.m. for bridge demo and girder erection.

- 23rd Street N will close between Rev. Abraham Woods and Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd., Wednesday, February 27th thru Friday, March 8th, for CBD bridge demo.
- Carraway Blvd. will close between 11th Avenue and 26th Street, Thursday, February 28th from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. to restripe the roadway and shift traffic.
Motorists are encouraged to use caution, obey the posted speed limits, adjust arrival/departure times, and use I-459 to go around the closures whenever possible. I-459 will be the most efficient way to avoid construction delays and bypass the closure. For local traffic, there will be signed detours along with increased presence of law enforcement, Alabama Service Assistance Patrol (ASAP) trucks, and wrecker service to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible.
