I-59/20 Bridge Project Update
(CBD) Central Business District Project

BIRMINGHAM–The Alabama Department of Transportation is pleased to announce the installation of the first new bridge segment as part of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project. The segment was installed by contractors the morning of March 11th at the construction site on the corner of 19th Street North and 9th Avenue North.

In an effort to expedite the construction process, most of the bridge’s 2316 segments have been pre-cast at a casting facility in close proximity to the construction site. These segments will be transported to the site and installed utilizing a shoring tower method. This is one of the first segmented bridges of its kind in the United States to be erected using this method.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For traffic alerts and updates, please visit www.5920bridge.com, utilize the ALGO traffic app, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
