I-59/20 Bridge Project Update
(CBD) Central Business District Project

BIRMINGHAM– As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.

Weather permitting, the following closures will take place:

  • I-59/20 SB off ramp to 31st Street N will be closed Thursday, December 10th through Monday, December 17th from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. for Flume Construction.
  • I-59/20 NB between Red Mountain Expressway NB to 31st Street on ramp will be closed Thursday, December 10th through Wednesday, December 16th from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. for OHSB.
  • 19th Street N from Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd. to 10th Avenue N will be closed Thursday, December 10th through Thursday, December 17th from 12 a.m. until 11: 59 p.m. for  BL Harbert.
  • 24th Street N between Rev. Abraham Woods and Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. will be closed Thursday, December 10th through Tuesday, December 17th from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. for City of Birmingham Striping.
  • Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. between Caraway Blvd. and 28th Street will be closed Thursday, December 10th through Thursday, December 17th from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. for Paving/Striping.
  • Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. between 25th Street and Carraway Blvd. will be closed Thursday, December  10th through Thursday, December 17th from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. for Paving/Striping.
  • Carraway Blvd. between 13th Avenue and 26th Street will be closed Monday, December 14th through Friday December 16th from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. for Paving/Striping.

Detour signs will be in place where necessary. Please keep in mind that all construction plans can change due to weather and other factors. As always, use caution and obey the posted speed limits.

This work is a part of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
