I-59/20 Bridge Project Update
PHASE III CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENT, IN BIRMINGHAM
(CBD) Central Business District Project

BIRMINGHAM–As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.

Beginning Saturday, February 2nd at 9 p.m., Carraway Boulevard will be closed in the vicinity of the I-59/20 Central Business District bridges. Carraway Boulevard will re-open by 5 a.m., on February 4th. See map below.

Beginning mid-morning Sunday, February 3rd, there will be a controlled demolition using the mechanism of implosion for the remaining ramp structure from Red Mountain Expressway N to I-59/20 SB. This methodology for demolition is being performed by a renowned expert in this field. Recent example includes: Cline Avenue Bridge -Phase I: Eastbound in East Chicago, Indiana.

For safety reasons, the public is asked to stay away from the demolition site (exclusion zone).  The exclusion zone will be clearly marked and enforced for zero entry. No traffic will be allowed through the area during this time period.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution, obey the posted speed limits, adjust arrival/departure times, and use I-459 to go around the closures whenever possible. I-459 will be the most efficient way to avoid construction delays and bypass the closure. For local traffic, there will be signed detours along with increased presence of law enforcement, Alabama Service Assistance Patrol (ASAP) trucks, and wrecker service to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For traffic alerts and updates, please visit www.5920bridge.com, utilize the ALGO traffic app, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
