I-59/20 Bridge Project Weekly Update, in Birmingham

(CBD) Central Business District Project

BIRMINGHAM– As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.

  • Beginning at 9 p.m., March 9th, there will be a single right lane closure along I-59 southbound between Exit 126A (Carraway Blvd.) and Exit 124 C (I-65 northbound). In addition to the lane closure, the ramp from Red Mountain Express to I-59 southbound will also be closed. The closures are needed in order to make concrete spall repairs.
  • The signed detour route will direct motorists from RME onto I-59 northbound to Exit 129 (Airport Exit). Motorists will use Exit 129 to get onto I-59 southbound. The 31st Street on ramp to I-59 northbound will be closed as well.
  • Lanes are expected to re-open by 4 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10th.

Please keep in mind that all construction plans can change due to weather and other factors. As always, use caution and obey the posted speed limits.

This work is a part of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For traffic alerts and updates, please visit www.5920bridge.com, utilize the ALGO traffic app, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
