I-59/20 Bridge Project Update #2
(CBD) Central Business District Project

BIRMINGHAM– As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.

The following closures will take place weather permitting:

  • Thursday, June 25th at 7 p.m., the southbound direction of 1-65 from north of the Junction to (south of the Junction) to 3rd Ave North will be closed to complete the concrete grinding and joint sealing.
  • Saturday, June 27th at 6 a.m., thru Monday, June 29th, the I-65 northbound lane (right) from University Blvd. to just south of the downtown junction will be closed to complete grinding and joint sealing. These closures will include the northbound on-ramp at 6th Avenue North (6 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday) and the northbound on-ramp at 3rd Avenue South (6 a.m. Saturday through Monday morning 6 a.m.)
  • Additional message boards are being strategically placed several miles outside the work zone to make the traveling public aware so that alternative routes can be taken if desired.

Please keep in mind that all construction plans can change due to weather and other factors.

This work is a part of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
