BIRMINGHAM– As construction continues in downtown Birmingham for Interstate Improvements, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays.

The following closures will take place weather permitting as follows:

  • The 25th Street ramps on to I-59/20 NB and off from I-59/20 SB will close Wednesday, July 10th, 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., for bridge installation.
  • The I-59/20 Southbound Off Ramp to Carraway Blvd. will close Thursday, July 11th, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. for bridge installation.

The current Phase III closure of I-59/20 is approximately a one-mile stretch which includes the elevated section of I-59/20 through Birmingham’s Central Business District (CBD). During construction, closures beneath the CBD bridges will change as work progresses; however, the contractor has a responsibility to maintain at least one northbound and one southbound lane open at all times between 15th Street N and 18th Street N, between 19th Street N and 23rd Street N, and between 24th Street N and 26th Street N (Carraway Blvd). BIRMINGHAM– Weather permitting on Thursday, June 27th, at 9 a.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation will begin scheduled median maintenance as follows;

  • beginning Thursday, June 27th there will be various intermittent one lane closures on Red Mountain Expressway (US 31). Closures will be from the US 280 Interchange to the I-59/20 Interchange and affect the inside lane in both directions.

The above operation will be daily from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and will last for approximately 2 (two) days.

The following closures will take place weather permitting as follows:

  • Carraway Blvd. will be closed between 11th Avenue and 26th Street N, Tuesday, May 21st thru Friday, May 24th from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. to set segments across the roadway.
  • 28th Street closure between Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd and 11th Avenue, Monday, May 20th until Wednesday, May 22nd to repair the bridge deck overhead.
